Approach

Benna works predominately with the psychoanalytic model of psychotherapy. The process of psychoanalytic psychotherapy involves meeting on a regular basis, usually once or twice a week, or more frequently depending upon the issues you’re facing at the time. This regular, stable and confidential structure provides both the therapist and the patient the chance to connect with and understand what is happening for you at a deeper level. In turn this can enable us to better understand the beliefs and fears that shape your experiences, relationships and how you live in the world. Specific interventions may sometimes be useful and recommended throughout the therapy process to help ease specific or distressing symptoms whilst we continue to develop a greater understanding of the complex and often unconscious aspects of ourselves that influence our lives.

This commitment of time, attention and thought can bring about authentic and lasting change, increasing our capacity for greater fulfilment and meaning in life.

Psychoanalysis is a highly effective, evidence based psychological treatment that has continued to improve the lives of many people since it was originally founded by Sigmund Freud (1857- 1939). The practice is built upon the founding theories of the human mind as developed by Freud along with Dr Carl Jung and Dr D W Winnicott and is also informed by many subsequent and contemporary movements including Object Relations, Attachment theory, Relational Psychoanalysis and clinicians including Neville Symmington, Dr Nancy McWilliams, Dr Bessel Van der Kolk and Gabor Maté.
